Reflection
1. Define which techniques you tried and mastered? Struggled?
The techniques that I tried were contouring and shadows. I was able to master contouring because I was able to make the hat look rounded. However, I struggled a lot with the shadows and I was unable to make it look right.
2. How did you draw inspiration from other artists techniques or aesthetics in your work? In what ways did you derive meaning or gain historical perspectives from their work? Why these artists?
I drew inspiration from those who make this type of hat and it allowed for me to 1) better understand the Panama culture and 2) grow closer to my grandfather who when he was younger, he wore this specific type of hat.
3. Describe the evolution of your piece. Decisions made. Compositional elements.
The evolution of this piece consisted of drawing a rough sketch of the hat. This hat is woven and I thought that colored pencils would help give texture to the hat.
4. If you could consider doing something over, explain why you would do this and what you would do next time?
I would change the shadow because it looks like a just placed it there instead of making it look like a shadow. Also, I would do something with the background and not leave it white.
5. Elaborate on how this piece links with your other pieces? What is the common thread?
This piece relates back to my other pieces because it shows a hat that relates back to my hispanic culture. This connects to my common thread because I don't really know much about my family in Panama, but I want to learn more about the culture and my family.
