Typography Questions
1. How did people first attempt to communicate?
People first attempted to communicate by using imagery which is known as pictorial forms. This is a form of symbols that were mainly carved into caves around 25,000 B.C.
2. What are pictographs?
Pictographs are different symbols that mean multiple things. For example, a symbol of a women or man and a child represents a pedestrian crossing. Pictographs are a simpler way for people to know what is around them (bathroom, hospital, library, phone, etc.) Also, with pictographs there is no language barrier because there is no words, so everyone is able to understand them whether or not they are native to the country.
3. List the 3 early alphabets outlined in the presentation.

- there were only consonants in this alphabet
* Greek
- this alphabet was the expanded version of the Phoenician alphabet
- Greeks gave names to the letters and they also incorporated vowels into the alphabet
- this alphabet was the first time that reading was from left to right and top to bottom

4. Who invented the printing press?
Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press in the mid 15th century and this was the fastest way to print books and it was to help impact knowledge since books were being made more than once and everyone was finally able to learn a subject/topic that they wanted to learn.
5. Why does typography matter in graphic design?
Typography matters in graphic design because it helps convey a message that the artist wants to get across. If the typography doesn't match what the artist is saying or it is very distracting, then it can ruin their message and can be unclear as to what they are trying to say.
6. What is the definition of typeface?
The definition of typeface is the upper and lowercase letter that are within the design.
7. What is the difference between serif and san serif typefaces?
The difference between serif and san serif typefaces is that serif typeface is when there are finishing marks which shows that the letter is finished being written. A san serif typeface is meant to be seen from a distance and it makes reading harder when this type of typeface is used for a long period of time.
8. List 3 different types of type-styles.
